The Cyber and Fraud Hub, a Scottish charity that supports individuals affected by cyber-crime and fraud, has announced the appointment of Alex Dowall as chief executive officer ahead of its first anniversary.
Dowall brings over thirty years of policing experience to his new role, which includes time as a Detective Superintendent with Police Scotland and an extensive background in cybercrime.
This, combined with his experience and achievements in his first year in the Cyber and Fraud Centre, makes him well placed to steer the Hub through its next phase of growth.
“The Cyber and Fraud Hub will continue to work closely with Police Scotland, banks, and leading technology companies to provide the public with comprehensive support and fraud prevention education,” said Dowall.
“As it enters its second year, the Hub remains committed to its mission to create a safer digital future for individuals.”
The Hub aims to aid in public education and understanding of cybercrime and fraud through a collection of free educational courses and resources, and looks to support victims of crime through reporting and legal guidance, victim assistance, and recovering funds.
In its first year, the Cyber and Fraud Hub claims to have handled fraud cases worth over £9.5m, helping to recover close to £700,000 through its helpline and collaborations.
It has also assisted nearly 290 individuals with all aspects of online cyber and fraud, and forged collaborative partnerships with financial institutions like Natwest, Barclays and Metro banks, as well as other organisations including Ask Silver, Trading Standards Scotland and Age Scotland.
CEO of the Cyber and Fraud Centre – Scotland and acting chief executive for the Cyber and Fraud Hub – Scotland, Jude McCorry, said: “The small team has achieved way more than we could have imagined in the first year, and it’s now time for Alex to take on the role of chief executive to continue to support the growth and the victim support.
“We look forward to working together and seeing both the Centre and the Hub go from strength to strength.”
